ITHACA The son of Cayuga Heights couple said Sunday he was assaulted by police and briefly detained as he tried to report on a land dispute in a southern Chinese village, where residents protesting the arrest of an anti-corruption activist held officials hostage for more than a week.
Freelance journalist Danfung Dennis told The Associated Press he was released Sunday afternoon after authorities detained him for about 10 to 12 hours in a hotel room in Shanwei, a city in Guangdong province.

ITHACA — The son of a Village of Lansing couple said Sunday he was assaulted by police and briefly detained as he tried to report on a land dispute in a southern Chinese village, where residents protesting the arrest of an anti-corruption activist held officials hostage for more than a week.
Freelance journalist Danfung Dennis told The Associated Press he was released Sunday afternoon after authorities detained him for about 10 to 12 hours in a hotel room in Shanwei, a city in Guangdong province.
Lansing’s John Dennis, Danfung’s father, told The Ithaca Journal he had spoken to his son today and that he was free and safe. Danfung is a 2004 graduate of Cornell University where he majored in Applied Management and Economics. He graduated from Ithaca High School in 2000. He has been a journalist in China for most of the last year, his father said.
Danfung Dennis, 25, told The Associated Press that policemen hit him over the head several times and injured his arm when he tried to use his mobile phone during the detention.
