WESTCHESTER, N.Y.—Lois Bronz, the 8th District’s County Legislator in Westchester, went to see Shen Yun Performing Arts’ sell-out show at SUNY Purchase College on August 2, and came out a different woman.

New York-based Shen Yun portrays China’s divinely-inspired cultural heritage in classical Chinese dance and music, a “marvelous link with the history of China,” Ms. Bronz said.

She was attending the show with her friend Alfreda Williams, former Town Clerk of 14 years for Greenberg who is running for Ms. Bronz’s seat.

Ms. Bronz, is retiring after 16 years as a Westchester legislator.

An excited Ms. Bronz said the show was “very informative, very spiritual [with] a distinct message of hope.”

Unique to Shen Yun are story-based dances of ancient legends of heroism like Monkey King, modern tales of courage [the persecution of Falun Gong today in China] and folklore traditions that portray an ancient Chinese belief that good is rewarded and evil punished, even if not in this lifetime.

Ms. Bronz said the legends “were just great,” the professionalism “was just wonderful,” including the dancing, the color and the singing. “What marvelous voices,” she added.

There was more to Shen Yun however, than all those qualities, Ms Bronz said.”There is a message that as a culture, the Chinese people have found peace—there’s a serenity, and a sensitivity in everything that you do and say. You’re just not the same person you were when you came. You have an opportunity to reflect on some of the goodness in people and the spirit. You leave this place with that inner spirit and a little bit of peace that perhaps you didn’t have before.”

The spiritual element in the show was like a gift, she said. “It gives you something to take away with you—very special.”

Former Town Clerk: ‘Truly Inspiration’

Ms. Williams was delighted to be invited by her friend to see the awe-inspiring Shen Yun performance.

“The dancers are so very graceful and talented and you can see that they are dancing from their hearts. … It was really wonderful—a really inspiring performance.”

The two friends said despite the cultural differences between China and The US, Shen Yun offered something for everyone.

“Wonderfully talented, the costumes, the choreography all of it was very inspiring. I think that young people of either Chinese origin, or any origin would enjoy seeing them and watching their dedication and learn something from it. The last piece was truly inspirational.”
