Two professors from the University of Manitoba, specialists in human rights and Asia, gave presentations at the forum. A Falun Gong practitioner also told of his experiences of being persecuted in China.

Ben Wang, a Falun Gong practitioner who endured persecution in China, tells of his experiences

Free China: The Courage to Believe is a 2012 documentary film covering the persecution of Falun Gong. Directed by Michael Perlman, Free China tells the stories of two Falun Gong practitioners who were jailed and persecuted for their belief. It is the winner of many film festivals, including American INSIGHT’s 2012 Free Speech Film Festival and WorldFest’s 2012 Film Festival. The movie has been screened at many international film festivals, and Houses of Parliament and Congresses of many countries, including the United States, the European Union, Canada, Japan, and Sweden.

The Winnipeg Human Rights Film Festival is sponsored by the Manitoba Association for Rights and Liberties, which was founded in 1987. The festival lasted for three days. Free China was screened on the first day.

After the screening, Ben Wang, a Falun Gong practitioner from China, gave a talk and told of his experiences of being persecuted in China. He was jailed in a forced labor camp, detention center and a brainwashing center. He was forced to do heavy labor and watch brainwashing videos as part of the Chinese Communist Party’s attempt to force him to renounce his belief.

An Asian Studies professor from the University of Manitoba pointed out that the traditional Chinese culture has been lost in China under the communist regime. After the presentations, many people from the audience asked questions. A Vietnamese person, who experienced the communist party’s persecution, asked Ben Wang whether his speech today would put his family members in China in danger. Mr. Wang answered, “As the Falun Gong practitioner in the movie said, somebody has to stand up and expose the persecution. Freedom is not free.” After the forum, many people came up to shake hands with Mr. Wang, welcoming him to Canada, and thanking him for exposing the persecution.

Respected Teacher & Falun Gong Practitioner Ms. Liu Weishan Sent for Cremation While Still Alive

March 29, 2013 | By a Minghui correspondent from Hubei Province, China

(Minghui.org) Ms. Liu Weishan, a schoolteacher from Xiangfan City, Hubei Province, was arrested seven times from 1999 to 2002 by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) for remaining resolute in her practice of Falun Gong. She has been mistreated and held against her will in detention centers and hospitals ever since.

Paralyzed and in a state of mental collapse for years, the authorities sent her to be cremated in 2011. Fortunately, the crematorium staff realized that she was still alive and refused to proceed.

She remains confined to the hospital to this day, in a vegetative state. It is forbidden for any visitors to see her.

Similar stories can be told by the loved ones of Falun Gong practitioners who have been tortured in hospitals and detention centers all across China. More details of Ms. Liu’s case are presented below.

Ms. Liu Weishan, paralyzed as a result of persecution in prison

Summary of Key Facts

Gender: Female
Age: 50s
Address: Hanjiang Machinery Factory (汉江机械厂)
Occupation: Teacher
Date of Most Recent Arrest: October 13, 2002
Most Recent Place of Detention: Wuhan City Women’s Prison (武汉市女子监狱)

A Dedicated Teacher

Ms. Liu used to teach at the school affiliated with Hanjiang Machinery Factory (currently the Aerospace Safety Equipment Company) and was recognized as an “Outstanding Individual” a number times by the factory and at the provincial level. Diligent and sincere, Ms. Liu was highly regarded and respected by her fellow teachers and the students.

Relentless Persecution

The persecution of Falun Gong began in July 1999, and Ms. Liu’s factory leaders followed regime guidelines to repeatedly persecute Ms. Liu.

In September 2002, Ms Liu was arrested for the seventh time! This time it was because she was distributing informational materials about Falun Gong.

The party secretary for the factory, Hu Daixin, told the 610 Office, “Don’t let her go home this time. I will pay you as much as you want so long as you keep her inside.”

On October 13, 2002, Ms. Liu was sentenced to four years in prison by a Xiangfan City Court. Just a few months after she was sent to Wuhan Women’s Prison, she suffered a mental collapse as a result of the abuse she had to endure.

Ms. Liu was secretly transferred to the 364 Aviation Hospital in Xiangfan City for “treatment” in January 2006.

By 2010, still mentally confused, she was also paralyzed and her muscles had atrophied. She could no longer hold herself upright, and her legs were bent and crippled. Occasionally she would say, “I want to go home!”

When the 364 Aviation Hospital moved from the suburbs to the city in August 2011, staff from the 610 Office and the hospital CCP secretary ordered Ms. Liu to be taken to the crematorium even though her heart was still beating. Thanks to the staff at the crematorium who refused to cremate her, Ms. Liu narrowly escaped death.

Ms. Liu is currently in Room 10 on the 6th floor at the 364 Aviation Hospital. She is not allowed to have visitors. According to her relatives, Ms. Liu has fallen into a vegetative state. She cannot eat or drink and is being given no medical treatment.

The following describes some of what Ms. Liu has endured:

Begins Practicing Falun Gong in 1999 and Regains Her Health

Ms. Liu Weishan used to be weak and in poor health, but after she started to practice Falun Gong in early 1999, she turned into a healthy person, full of vigor. Her colleagues witnessed firsthand how she changed within two weeks after beginning to practice. Three months later, all her illnesses were miraculously gone.

In 1999, the Chinese Communist regime started to openly persecute Falun Gong. Seeing that people around her were deceived by the overwhelming lies being broadcast by the government-controlled media, and out of her own desire to do what she thought was right, Ms. Liu started to tell people about the benefits of Falun Dafa. She told people not to believe the lies on TV. Party authorities in the factory put her under house-arrest for doing so.

Repeated Arrests, Detention, Forced Feeding

In 2000, a truth-clarifying flyer appeared on the factory’s bulletin board. The factory leaders then colluded with the 610 Office and arrested Ms. Liu on her way to work. She started a huger strike to protest. After she was released, her salary was reduced to just over 100 yuan per month, barely enough to live on.

On December 16, 2000, Ms. Liu was notified that she could resume teaching at the school. It was a trick. She was taken to a brainwashing center from the school campus. At the center, she was cruelly beaten, tied up, kicked, and forced to kneel on the floor by Nie Xiaowu, head of the political security section of the Xiangfan Police Department. She was detained in the Hanjiang Police Station for 18 days.

On July 3, 2001, Ms. Liu was seized by the security office of the factory and taken to Xiangfan City Forced Labor Camp, where she was locked in a tiny solitary cell for five days. The cell was so small that she could not even stand up and had to half squat.

In April 2002, Hanjiang Police Station officers broke into her home and searched it, taking away her Dafa books. In May 2002, the Xiangfan City Procuratorate had her arrested. Ms. Liu went on a hunger strike to protest and was later taken to the Xiangfan City First Hospital, where she was force-fed for 15 days. She almost died.

Sentenced to Prison after Being Arrested Seven Times

Ms. Liu was arrested for the seventh time on September 14, 2002, when she was distributing truth clarification materials. She taken to the First Detention Center in Xiangfan City. After her many appeals failed, she began a hunger strike. She was then force-fed.

A few strong inmates held her head, hands and feet, and a tube was forced into her stomach through her nose. At the same time, the police directed the inmates to pinch her, pull her hair, slap her, and strip her. They covered her with a sheet, saying that this way it was easier for her to relieve herself.

She was force-fed twice a day, but the tube was only changed once every 15 days. When the tube was pulled out, the lower half was black. She endured such torture for 40 days, until finally she became very infirm.

On October 13, 2002, the already feeble Ms. Liu was secretly sentenced to four years in prison. The next day, she was taken to Wuhan Women’s Prison.

Mentally Disabled after Being Cruelly Tortured in Prison

Wuhan Women’s Prison put Dafa practitioners in solitary cells, handcuffed them behind their backs, and denied them food for several days; they were not allowed to sleep. The guards pretended to know nothing about what was going on. Practitioners went on hunger strikes to protest the cruel treatment. The guards then used the inmates’ leftover meals along with old, spoiled food and soup to force-feed them. In these harsh conditions, many practitioners developed mental disorders or even died.

Only a few months after being taken to Wuhan Women’s Prison, Ms. Liu was rendered mentally disabled. She became emaciated, she stopped menstruating, her arms trembled, and her legs were bent and crippled. She became extremely frail. She was frequently taken to the medical clinic and injected with unknown drugs. She was tied up with ropes and force-fed unknown drugs. The brutal force-feeding damaged her esophagus.

Hospital Follows Instructions from the 610 Office to Torture Ms. Liu

On the evening of January 31, 2006 Ms. Liu was secretly taken to the 364 Aviation Hospital for “treatment.” She was unconscious and in critical condition. Her name was not recorded in the hospital registration, and two people were assigned to watch her around the clock.

Her colleagues, students, and friends visited her and were shocked by her condition: “How could a healthy person end up like this? She is no more than skin and bones. Her whole body was crippled and deformed, and her eyes were dull.”

After February 11, 2006, when people went to visit her again, they saw a sign posted on the door of the ward that read, “Critically Ill, No Visitors.” Everyone who came to visit her was stopped and questioned.

By 2010, Ms Liu had become paralyzed and her muscles had atrophied. She was mentally confused and could only say a few words now and then. She kept telling the guards, “I want to go home!”

In August 2011 when the 364 Aviation Hospital moved, Ms. Liu was transferred with it. During this time, staff from the 610 Office and Fan Zhiyong, the CCP hospital secretary, gave orders that Ms. Liu be taken to the crematorium even though her heart was still beating.

While the staff at the crematorium were preparing for the cremation, they discovered that her heart was still beating, so they refused to continue. That is why Ms. Liu was taken back to the hospital.

Ms. Liu Weishan is currently in Room 10 on the 6th floor at the 364 Aviation Hospital in Hubei. A few of Ms. Liu’s colleagues went to see her, but were stopped by a nurse surnamed Kang, who said, “I have orders from above. No one is allowed to visit her.”

(Minghui.org) After serving a 10-year prison term for practicing Falun Gong, former Lieutenant-Commander Wang Youjiang was unable to take care of himself when he was released on January 9, 2011. Nevertheless, he was arrested again in June 2012 by the Lanzhou Domestic Security Division. He was secretly tried on November 24, 2012. He is now in the Lanzhou No. 2 Detention Center and being interrogated using torture.

Lieutenant Wang Youjiang

Personal Account of Most Recent Injustice

Lieutenant Wang recalled: “The police used force to extort confessions from us. I was tied on the tiger bench for three days and nights, and they interrogated me around the clock. A high wattage light was directed right in my eyes. They showed me the detention warrant three days after I was detained. My blood pressure went up to 220/130 mmHg.

“At 7:00 in the morning on November 24, 2012, Chengguan District Court personnel came to the detention center and took Mr. Ge Qingchun, a Falun Gong practitioner from Gangsu, and me to the courthouse. Arriving at the court gate, we noticed the tight security and many plainclothes officers outside the courthouse. Those who wanted to go in were questioned. I saw officers from the Domestic Security Division of the Chengguan District Police Department guarding the gate, too.

“An audience was prearranged by the court to fill the seats inside the courtroom. I did not see anyone from my family nor anyone I knew. The hearing proceeded very quickly, and we were not given much opportunity to speak. From the beginning, the public prosecutor announced us guilty of practicing Falun Gong. We were questioned as to whether or not we were involved in posting messages. The judge constantly interrupted us when we attempted to speak up and defend ourselves. The entire hearing went as what the court had planned. According to the bailiff, there were over 200 policemen guarding the courthouse that day.”

Prior Arrests and Harassment

Lieutenant Wang graduated from the Zhangjiakou Communications Institute and worked at the Communication Headquarters of the Lanzhou Military Region. He started practicing Falun Gong in 1998. When the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) started persecuting Falun Gong on July 20, 1999, he went to Beijing on January 3, 2000, to appeal for the right to practice. He was detained at the military base of his employment for two months and was considered a “priority case.” To spare his superiors from taking the blame because of him, Lieutenant Wang volunteered to transfer his employment. Before that could happen, officers from the Lanzhou Police Department arrested him on January 6, 2001.

Lieutenant Wang was sentenced to 10 years in Lanzhou Prison. After 10 years of abuse, this once handsome and vital young man could no longer take care of himself. Lieutenant Wang went back to his hometown in Yongdeng County after he was released on January 9, 2011. During the year he was home, he was constantly visited by officers from local Political and Legal Affairs Committee and 610 Office. Officers from the Lanzhou City Political and Legal Affairs Committee, 610 Office, and Lanzhou Prison invaded his home on April 26, 2012, and harassed him. Lieutenant Wang was unable to live a peaceful and undisturbed life.

Details of Current Situation

In mid-June 2012, Lieutenant Wang went to Lanzhou to seek employment. He was arrested on June 30. His family was not notified about his arrest until August 16. By that time, he had already been taken to Lanzhou No. 2 Detention Center. The Chengguan Procuratorate approved the arrest because Lieutenant Wang was involved with “an illegal organization to undermine the implementation of law.”

Toward the end of October, Lieutenant Wang received the indictment from Chengguan District Court of Lanzhou that he would be tried again. Lieutenant Wang called on public for assistance and sent out updates on his situation twice through many helping hands. He hoped his family and friends could hire a lawyer for him. His family did hire a lawyer from Beijing to defend Lieutenant Wang and another Falun Gong practitioner, Mr. Chen Jie. Mr. Chen and Lieutenant Wang were arrested together, but Mr. Chen was taken to the Lanzhou No. 1 Detention Center.

The lawyer arrived in Lanzhou on November 13. However, Lanzhou judicial authorities did not permit the lawyer to work on Lieutenant Wang’s case by not allowing him to talk to Lieutenant Wang or Mr. Chen. Lieutenant Wang’s family made multiple visits to local judicial authorities and the Chengguan District Court. They also met with the presiding judge of the criminal court, Wei Gongxin; Liu Dongyu; and other court officials. These officials not only did not follow legal procedures with regard to his case but also gave his family the wrong information.

Without notifying their families or lawyers, Chengguan District Court brought Lieutenant Wang, Mr. Chen Jie, and Mr. Ge Qingchun to trial.

Family Files Suit against the Court

Practicing Falun Gong and believing in Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance is not a crime. Articles 35 and 36 in the Constitution of the People’s Republic of China state that citizens have the “freedom to speak, publish and believe in their religion.”

Lieutenant Wang’s family gathered information regarding the Chengguan District Court’s secret hearing, decided to sue the court, and submitted the lawsuit to Lanzhou Intermediate Court on January 14, 2013. Inspector Liu Xiaoming received the case.

Lieutenant Wang is now in the Lanzhou No. 2 Detention Center. Chengguan District Court agents have been interrogating him using torture. Lieutenant Wang’s blood pressure went up to 220 mmHg again.

Falun Gong Practitioners Tortured at Heilongjiang Women’s Prison Hospital

March 29, 2013 | By a Minghui correspondent from Heilongjiang Province, China

(Minghui.org) Heilongjiang Women’s Prison has sent healthy Falun Gong practitioners to its prison hospital in order to torture them physically and mentally. The prison orders inmates, especially those serving long sentences, to torture Falun Gong practitioners. Such inmates will go far to abuse and torture practitioners in order to please the prison authorities. Since Zhao Huihua was appointed as the warden of the tenth division in 2008, she has used term reductions as bait to instigate Wang Xinhua and other inmates to brutally torture practitioners.

1. Ms. Li Yushu’s Throat Injured by Forced Feeding; Head Injury Requires Five Stitches

Ms. Li Yushu was a secretary for the Education Committee of Amuer Forestry Bureau in Daxinganling. After she started to practice Falun Gong in 1996, many illnesses she had suffered disappeared. She became very healthy. After the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) started to persecute Falun Gong, she was sentenced to 12 years in prison in Jiagedaqi in May 2002. In January 2003, she was transferred to the training division of Heilongjiang Women’s Prison. In March 2003, she was transferred to the first division. Now she is being detained in the tenth division, which is the sick inmate division.

Ms. Li has been detained for ten years. During that time, she has gone on hunger strikes to protest the persecution and been inhumanly tortured. She was confined in a cold “small cell” one Chinese New Year. Inmates often beat her because she studies the Fa or practices the exercises. One day, Xing Guohui, Li Yingli, and other inmates beat her because she did the exercises. Her chest and arms were injured. Wang Xinhua once grabbed her hair and hit her head against the wall several times, until other inmates finally stopped her.

One day when Wang Xinhua force-fed Ms. Li, she used chopsticks to push food into her mouth and down her throat. When Wang Xinhua yanked the chopsticks out, they broke and stabbed into Ms. Li’s throat, which started to bleed. Wang Xinhua often did not wash the utensils used for force-feeding. Buns used for force-feeding were soaked for several days. She often bound Ms. Li with a rope, stuffed her mouth with a rag used to clean toilets, and left her on the floor alone in a room that did not have a monitoring camera.

Wang Xinhua also beat and tortured other Falun Gong practitioners. She died in her 50s of leukemia in 2011.

In the middle of July 2012, warden Zhang Huihua, team leader Dai Ying, and other guards instigated Zhang Fangjing and over ten other inmates to force feed Ms. Li Yushu and Ms. Li Peixian, who had been on hunger strikes for a long time. They searched their belongings and hacked off their hair. They also hit and kicked the two practitioners and printed the character for “prisoner” on all their clothes as well as their bed sheets and quilt covers. To protest this indignity, the two practitioners did not wear the clothes with “prisoner” printed on them. They had to go to the bathroom in just their underwear. The inmates laughed at them.

On August 23, 2012, Ms. Li Yushu was transferred to Room 308 in the prison hospital. The prison ordered Li Tongtong and Hao Danjun to torture her both physically and mentally. The two inmates followed Ms. Li everywhere and often hit and kicked her. Ms. Li often shouted: “Falun Dafa is good!” and “Someone hit me.” Later on, Mo Li replaced Li Tongtong.

As a result of this torment, Ms. Li had symptoms of a heart attack, so the guards sent her to the prison hospital for treatment. She was given an intravenous injection against her will and drugs were added to the food that she was force-fed. Ms. Li developed edema. Inmate nurse Zhang gave her more injections, and Ms. Li got worse and worse. Finally, Ms. Li was transferred back to the Tenth Division from the hospital at the end of December 2012, some four months later.

On December 30, 2012, Ms. Li was pushed down on the floor in the bathroom by Liu Yanping and other inmates because she talked to another practitioner in the bathroom. The crash when she fell was very loud. Even people in the cell heard it. Ms. Li fainted and did not regain consciousness for some time. The back of her head was cut and bleeding, so she was taken to the hospital. Five stitches were needed to close the wound on her head.

2. Ms. Hu Aiyun Beaten Until She Fainted

Ms. Hu Aiyun was born in 1966 and lived on Xuanhua Street in the Nangang District, Harbin, Heilongjiang Province. Before she practiced Falun Gong, she had severe heart problems and easily fainted. She also had a short temper. After she started to practice Falun Gong in 1997, her illness symptoms disappeared, she was full of energy, and she began to treat others kindly. She made a complete change. Ms. Hu was arrested by the Harbin Police Department on June 21, 2003. She was sent to the Heilongjiang Women’s Prison on May 12, 2004. The following is an account of persecution she has suffered recently.

On November 15 and 16, 2012, when no guard was present, inmates Wang Wei, Sun Xiaodi, and Li Dandan put a prison uniform on Ms. Hu against her will. They tied her hands and feet with ropes and stuffed her mouth with toilet paper. Wang abused Ms. Hu and hacked off her hair with scissors. She also punched Ms. Hu in the head and face and stomped on her ankles. Ms. Hu was then left on the cold floor. Wang shouted that she could leave Ms. Hu tied up as long as she wanted. Ms. Hu was tortured until 9 p.m. She had symptoms of a heart attack and her hands cramped.

On November 21, 2012, Wang Wei and Li Kun grabbed Ms. Hu’s hair and beat her because she refused to be force-fed. She fainted, so Wang Wei stabbed her with a needle and woke her up. Ms. Hu could not get up for two days. Wang Wei said, “This is the sick inmate division. It is normal if a couple of inmates die.”

On December 6, 2012, Bai Yingxian, warden of Heilongjiang Women’s Prison, and Zhao Huihua went to the prison hospital for an inspection. Ms. Hu managed to escape from her cell to tell them what was happening and submitted written documents. She was transferred to a big group on the third floor in the Tenth Division that day. The room held about 20 people.

As another example of persecution, inmate Li Jingfu often tortures Falun Gong practitioners. She has stripped off their clothes and written the character for “prisoner” on their bodies. She also beats them. She now has late-term uterine cancer. Her hair all fell out within a few months.

These are just a few examples of how Falun Gong practitioners are tortured in the Prison Hospital of Heilongjiang Women’s Prison. The hospital still instigates inmate nurses to torture practitioners.

This is what is happening to Falun Gong practitioners in Heilongjiang Women’s Prison. Please help to stop this prison and its hospital from committing crimes.

Falun Dafa Saved Me From an Incurable Cancer

March 29, 2013 | By a practitioner in Guangdong Province

(Minghui.org) My husband was lucky to start practicing Falun Dafa in the late 1990s. At that time, I wasn’t for or against it. In 1999, when practitioners of Falun Dafa began to be persecuted, I didn’t understand, so I was against him practicing. This led him to avoid me when he was practicing.

In August of 2010, I was diagnosed with a bowel obstruction. I was hospitalized for several days and given frequent injection. After a week, my bowels still didn’t open up. The doctors thought this was due to a tumor and referred me to the province hospital. I stayed there for another week, but that didn’t help either. I was in a living hell.

One night I dreamed that two unknown women kidnapped me. I asked, “Where are we going?” They said, “We’re taking you to a good place.” “Can I return home?” I asked. “No, you cannot.” At that point in the dream, my husband came and asked me not to go with them. So I escaped from them and came back.

Further testing revealed a cancerous tumor. I underwent surgery lasting about 5 hours. The surgeons discovered that the cancer had already spread to other areas in my body and recommended six weeks of chemotherapy. I cannot describe how sad I was!

My husband was there for me the whole time. He wore the Falun Dafa amulet and listened to the lectures as he stayed in my hospital room with me. Strangely, I didn’t tell him to stop. Also, when he told me to say, “Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance is good, Falun Dafa is good,” I didn’t say no. In fact, I started to say it without any doubt. After the chemotherapy, I was rechecked and assured that nothing was wrong any longer. After a year and a half, I was reevaluated and told that the cancer had spread to my lungs, and the tumor was now as big as a fist. I was in the last stages of lung cancer, so I could not benefit from surgery. The doctors suggested another course of chemotherapy. However, I had friends that had also had cancer and they did not experience good results with chemotherapy. My husband asked the doctor if chemotherapy would cure me, but he could not promise that. My husband decided it would be best for me to leave the hospital. The doctor thought that this was too bad, because we had already paid for the medicine, and now we were not going to use it.

We stopped at a hotel on our way home from the hospital that day. My husband told me to say “Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance is good, Falun Dafa is good,” and gave me Master’s lectures on the MP3 player. I listened to them, and the more I listened, the more peaceful and warm my body got. When we got home, I needed to use the bathroom badly. I passed a lot of liquid much like thick blood. I was nervous, but my husband said, “Master is cleaning your body out.” Indeed, that is exactly how I felt. When I had had a colonoscopy, they had found polyps, which made it hard for me to eat anything. I passed so much stuff; how was that possible? After that, I started practicing with my husband. My mother-in-law worried about me and brewed a big pot of medicine for me. When I drank it, I had diarrhea. After that, I accidentally burned the medicine pot and damaged it. When I bought a new one, I discovered that rats had eaten the medicine in the pot. I then realized that, as a practitioner, you have no illnesses.

My husband and I compared our cultivation journeys. My body had undergone big changes. Before, I could not walk up the stairs without breathing heavily. Now, my husband is slower than me when we walk up stairs. If I had gone through chemotherapy, I would no doubt be writing my last will right now. It was Master that saved me and gave me another life. How could ever I repay Master?! My husband and I have diligently clarified the truth and, as a result, many people have changed their views about Falun Dafa. They know the truth, and they all say, “Falun Dafa is good!”

Thank you, Master, for saving my life!
